UMW PURPOSE

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

Who are we?

“A community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop creative supportive fellowship and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.” - UMW Handbook.  More than 80,000 women around the world participate in “God’s unfinished business advanced through the work of UMW Circles.”

What is a Circle?

Circle is the term used to denote a group of women who meet, study and plan activities.  They meet at a time and place decided by the members.  They fellowship, pray and participate in various outreach projects, all designed to meet some need, either locally or globally

Our church has two large active Circles, which offer morning or evening meeting times.  Estelle Dameron/Betty Cummings Circle meets at 10:00 am on third Tuesdays.  Dianne Bolton Circle meets on the third Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm.

Meetings are held in members’ homes or at the church.  Current membership is approximately 70 women.  Our pastors are members UMW as well.

Who may join?
All women who desire to belong and to participate in the mission of the church through UMW.

How does participation in UMW help with personal and spiritual growth?

Members find that monthly meetings, mission projects and community outreach programs are inspiring and heartwarming.  In these ways and others, we keep in touch, share praises and sorrows, discover new avenues of service and help alleviate some of the physical needs found in our community.  We pray together, telephone, visit, send cards and emails to stay connected.

What are some of the mission activities of Circles?

UMW members feel called to reach out to the less fortunate, the underserved and the forgotten.  They quietly go about meeting basic physical needs in the community where possible, but also showing God’s love in their acts of mission.

A few of the ways they serve are Grace Camp Scholarships, Share the Blessing, meals for Youth Center children, donations to UMCOR, meals for Wesley Center students in Natchitoches, flood buckets, parties for Central Hospital patients, cookies and clothing to St. Christina’s Nursing Home, and Adopt-a-Senior Food Bank initiative.

In October, there are plans to sponsor a team for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure breast cancer 5k run.  Many other organizations and individuals are the recipients of their unselfish efforts, locally and globally.
